Born in America, reared as a child and educated as an adult in Ireland. I may have been born in the States, but Ireland will always be home to me. I'm a former award-winning journalist of some 15 years, so accuracy and truth are very important to me. Everyone must know the truth of An Gorta Mór—too many still believe that hundreds upon hundreds of thousands died simply because of several years of a potato crop failure in Ireland in the 1840s.

Scottish by birth, Irish by descent. Father's side - Sligo, Leitrim & Derry. Mother's side - Dublin, Monaghan, Armagh, Cavan & Down.

I don't recall how I came across this site.....luck? Maybe. Divine intervention....more like it! I honestly thought I was only one of a few who felt that the Irish Famine was not a famine but indeed a holocaust. Now I have this brilliant site and New Jersey's 5th grade curriculum to read. I better get started.... Thank you Swifty for bringing this site to life!!!

I had spent most of my childhood to early adult summers in Ireland. My mother is from Cavan. I spent many years on my grandparents farm, about a mile from Bawnboy, County Cavan. I was always drawn to this abandoned building in the small town. I wanted to roam the property; both inside and out. I remember my mother telling me that it was a workhouse, but she never did tell me why it was erected in the first place. I will visit there this summer and hopefully give myself a tour of the place. My father is from Mayo.

Grandparentsboth born in Ireland. I have dual citizenship via Roundstone born Grandmother. I am very proud to be of Irish descent.

I am of Irish descent, and have participated, in a small way in the past, an effort in the NJ/NY area to establish a famine course in the schools.  I have also traveled to Ireland, once on an around-the-island trip, including the Northern counties, and once as part of a women's delegation to Northern Ireland.  I am somewhat limited by health problems--I'm a senior citizen--so I have not been active on anything to do with Ireland for some time.
